Little known facts about Nakula that will surely blow your mind

You must be amazed to know some little known facts about Nakula. Nakula was the fourth of the five Pandavas. Nakula and Sahadeva were twins brothers. They are also called Ashvineya as they were born from Ashvini kumaras.

After the Kunti invited three of the Devtas (Yamadeva, Pawandeva, and Indradeva) with the help of Mantra given to him by sage Durvasa, she got three sons Yudhisthira, Bheema, and Arjuna.  Madri was upset, so Pandu told Kunti to share the Mantra with Mardi so she can also be a mother. So Madri invoked Ashwini Kumaras and became the mother of Nakula and Sahadeva.

1. Nakula was a handsome

In all the Pandavas Nakula was the most handsome. Nakula was the elder from Sahdeva and he was as handsome as Kamadeva, Even the meaning of  Nakula is "The most handsome". He took special care to look beautiful and often indulged in superb self-praise about his hands.

2. Nakula killed 3 demons during the exile

Once in exile, Jatasura disguises himself as a Brahmin and kidnaps Nakula along with Draupadi, Sahadeva, and Yudhishthira. Bhima eventually rescued them and in the battle that took place, Nakula killed Kshemankara, Mahamaha, and Suratha.

3. Horse riding and Horse Keeping

Nakula was a great horse rider and he has very good knowledge about Horse breeds. He was also a good charioteer. During the 13th year of Pandava's exile, Nakula disguised himself and worked as an ostler at the kingdom of Matsya.

4. Knowledge of Ayurveda

Being the son of Physician Ashvini Kumaras were experts in Astrology and Ayurveda. Nakula new how to heal wounds in all living creatures especially with horses. While was looking after the horses of Matsya Kingdom, Horses was much healthier and active.

5. Expert Swordsman and Diplomat

Nakula was an expert swordsman. It is believed that he was so good with a sword that he could come out dry while riding a horse in rain. Nakula was a well-skilled diplomat and he was the chief of Yudhisthira's army.

6. Significance at Mahabharata battle

  •  On the 1st day of the war, Nakula defeated Dussasana but left him alive so that Bheema could fulfill his oath.
  • On the 11th day and 18th day, Nakula defeated Shalya, destroying his mother Madri’s brother's chariot but could not kill his Maternal uncle then Yudhisthira killed him with a heavy heart.
  • On the 17th day, he killed Shakuni's son Vrikaasur and on the 18th day of the war he killed three sons of Karna, Sushena, Chitrasena, and Satyasena.

7. Conch and Flag of Nakula at Mahabharata battle 

पाञ्चजन्यं हृषीकेशो देवदत्तं धनंजयः।
पौण्ड्रं दध्मौ महाशङ्खं भीमकर्मा वृकोदरः।।1.15।।
अनन्तविजयं राजा कुन्तीपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः।
नकुलः सहदेवश्च सुघोषमणिपुष्पकौ।।1.16।।

Sughosa is the conch shell of Nakula which means “Making a pleasant sound.” The flag of Nakula's chariot bore the image of a red deer with golden back. Nakula was the leader of one of the seven Akshahuni.

8. Nakula's wife and son

We all know that the first wife of Nakula was Draupadi and she gave birth to a son called Satanika who was killed by Ashwatthama at the end of Mahabharata war while he attacked Pandava's camp at night. Besides this Nakula married another Princess name Karenumati, the daughter of the king of The Chedi Kingdom, who gave birth to a son named Niramitra.

9. Nakula's Death

After the beginning of Kali Yuga and the departure of Krishna, the Pandavas retired. Giving all his belongings and ties, the Pandavas, along with a dog, undertook the last of their pilgrimage to the Himalayas.

Except for Yudhishthira, all the Pandavas became weak and died before reaching heaven. Nakula was third in the fall after Draupadi and Sahadev. When Bheema asks Yudhishthira why Nakula fell, the reason for this is pride in his beauty and his belief that there was no one who was the same as him.

 For Yudhishthira, the Dharmatma, Self-praise was a sin in terms of the moral code of those days, but for Yudhishthira, even self-praise in thought was no less sinful.
